“ Seven months after I had a stroke affecting the right side of my body, I came to Hope Brain Center looking to speed my recovery. I was still in a wheelchair when I started. After about two weeks I had enough confidence to come in with a walker. The doctors and technicians at Hope are such wonderful, caring, knowledgeable people, they are as eager for my recovery as I am! I’m so grateful to them and so happy I came.”
Karen Adamo, recovering from a stroke.

What is a Stroke?
A stroke is the result of a lack of blood flow to the brain. There is a range of reasons this can occur, however the most common is a blockage or narrowing of the vascular systems that lead to the brain. Once the brain is cut off from oxygenated blood flow, brain cells begin to die or become damaged at an alarming rate. This can lead to permanent cognitive and physical disability, depending on the severity of the stroke. The CDC estimates that around 795,000 Americans suffer a stroke each year, with 87% of them due to ischemic strokes, meaning blood flow to the brain is blocked.

Stroke Treatment at Hope Brain and Body Recovery Center
As mentioned above, we offer a range of services to help our patients avoid potential strokes as well as recover and restore the quality of life following a stroke. We utilize different treatments for every stroke case. Some of the best treatments we use are listed below:
GyroStim Therapy
GyroStim is a state-of-the-art, multi-axis rotating chair used to provide vestibular stimulation, stimulating neurons and creating new pathways in the brain. It gyroscopically rotates on multiple axis as you attempt to hit visual targets with your line of sight, strengthening visual and spatial connections. The entire apparatus is computer-controlled and can show participants their strengths and weaknesses, reaction times, and proficiency with hand-eye coordination.
During the session, you’ll use a ‘laser’ to hit targets as they come into your field of vision. The GyroStim will collect this data and adapt it in real-time to continuously challenge you as your skill level increases. A typical GyroStim session typically lasts about 30 minutes total, with runs lasting 30-60 seconds each time.
Neurofeedback Therapy
Suffering a stroke may cause synaptic pathways to become interrupted, meaning muscle memory for everyday actions is lost, or cognitive ability becomes impaired. Neurofeedback uses a brain wave detection tool, called an electroencephalogram (EEG) to decode brain waves and transmit them to a receiver to be used in special therapy sessions. The signal can be converted into a visual on a screen, or attached to an audio signal.
The premise of this therapy is that your brain can rebuild broken connections and pathways by using visual training as a guide, encouraging positive and productive thought patterns to reinforce and strengthen them.
Oxygen Therapy
Concentrated Oxygen is delivered to the body to stimulate the spleen to create a massive amount of red blood cells. The red blood cells carry the concentrated oxygen all over the body and into the deepest tissues including the brain to promote healing at the cellular level.
Low Light Level Laser Therapy
Laser light penetrates into the tissue of the brain causes neurogenesis to occur. Research has proven that laser therapy increases the number of neurons in the brain and reconnect old neurons. When a stroke occurs neurons are lost due to Axonal damage. It is important for rehabilitation to start promptly after a stroke.
Clinical Nutrition
Although anyone can suffer a stroke, there are key indicators and risk factors that place you at a greater risk of a stroke. Clinical Nutrition is a holistic approach to patient health, observing your habits, lifestyle choices, and genetic history to make informed decisions about areas that can be improved. The leading contributors to stroke are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, and diabetes. The CDC estimates that 1 in 3 US adults has at least one of these conditions or habits.
Our Clinical Nutrition Specialists will consult with you, gathering as much health information as we can and using it as a foundation for preventative treatment plans that can lower your risk of stroke and help you live a longer, healthier life!
