Tips For Managing Migraines Before They Happen

People who experience chronic migraines suffer from significantly reduced quality of life as migraines force them to cancel on plans, fall behind at work, and cause substantial amounts of stress. This 2015 study indicates the epidemiology of headaches and migraines, affecting roughly 1 out of every 7 Americans annually. Chronic migraines and headaches are a leading cause of outpatient and emergency hospital visits – remaining an important public health problem.

The team at Hope Brain & Body Recovery Center specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of migraines and headaches. Our team understands that this is a multifaceted condition that may be attributed to a range of deficiencies and disorders within the brain and body. We utilize comprehensive testing methods to find the cause of your headaches and aim to correct the issue at its source!

What Causes Headaches?

Migraines and headaches can arise due to direct neurological dysfunction along with a few other issues within the body. At Hope Brain Center our doctors can treat neurological dysfunction with a plethora of cutting-edge technologies and diagnostic equipment.

Neurological dysfunction: possibly occur due to poor brain wave states. Erchonia/Multiradiance Brain Lasers bring equilibrium to the brain state without any pain.

Nutritional Deficiency: The Brain consumes 20% of the body’s energy so any nutritional deficiency can also easily cause a migraine or headache.

Musculoskeletal Origin: Sprains, strains, tensions, or trigger points that can cause radiating pain resulting in a migraine or headache.

How are Migraines Different Than Other Headaches?

The location and characteristics of migraine pain are different than other types of headaches. Individuals often report feeling as if a band is tightening around their heads. Migraine headaches cause severe pulsing or throbbing pain that often occurs on just one side of your head. You may also experience:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Extreme sensitivity to light and sound

Some individuals develop symptoms that occur right before or during the headache, which are known as migraine aura and may include visual flashes of light, numbness, and tingling in your face.

5 Ways To Manage Migraines

Migraines are very tough to live with, and equally as tough to avoid. That being said, there is a list of things you can do to prevent or limit the severity of your migraines. We have created a simplified list below for your consideration.

Find Comfortable Surroundings

At the first hint of migraine symptoms, step away from whatever you’re doing if possible.

  • Turn off the lights – Migraines make you highly sensitive to light and sound. Relocate to a dark, quiet room and sleep if possible.
  • Hot or cold compresses – apply it to your head or neck. Ice to relieve the pain and hot to relax and release muscle tension.

Maintain A Healthy Sleep Schedule

Poor or insufficient amounts of sleep can cause migraines. Implement the following tips to encourage healthier, more sound sleep.

  • Stick to a sleep schedule – Wake up and go to bed at the same time every day
  • Destress at the end of the day – your favorite music, a warm bath or shower, or try reading a favorite book.
  • Avoid stimulants before bed – Avoid intense exercise, large meals, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol, as they can interfere with your ability to sleep deeply.
  • Minimize distractions – No TV and no cell phone before bed – they keep your mind active and keep you awake. Studies show that light exposure significantly reduces the quality and duration of healthy sleep

Importance of Healthy Eating

A healthy diet can reduce the frequency and severity of your migraines. Consider the following:

  • Consistent Timing – Eat meals around the same time every day.
  • Don’t skip meals – Fasting, hunger, and energy depletion can trigger migraines.
  • Identify trigger foods – Certain foods might be causing your migraines, as such, if you notice a pattern occurring, try not eating that food for a while

Manage Your Stress Levels

Stress has long been known to initiate or worsen migraines. If you can manage or mitigate your biggest causes of stress, it becomes possible to reduce or prevent migraines from happening as frequently:

  • Less is more – respect your personal limitations, don’t put yourself in a position to be overwhelmed.
  • Meditation – control your breathing, release tense muscles, and organize your thoughts. It only takes 10 minutes to calm yourself and recenter.
